What I've Been Up To
Sorry for my long absence - AGAIN! I have actually joined the land of the "employed-outside-the home". Which has totally been kicking my ass. But things have not come to a complete standstill interior design-wise. Here's an little overview of some happenings chez moi. If you're still out there - bear with me. I promise to kick it into gear!

Last Gasp of Summer
It's very hot today here - +32C, but there is a tinge of "fall" ( a four-letter f-word) around here at night. So I'm enjoying the last gasp of summer before it's time to haul out the pumpkins and acorns.
Enjoy the weekend.
P.S. In the spirit of full-disclosure, here is what was going on while I was trying to get the shot. By the way, cats are NOT allowed on tables in this household. The flowers were too much of an allure!

Now You See It, Now You Don't!
And this is why I was looking at these cute little prints - I REALLYREALLYREALLY need to cover up this - my big, deep dark secret....
Yeah, that's the thermostat to our gas fireplace. I seriously searched high and low for a replacement -EVERYWHERE! And I asked Jack if we could just replace it with a switch. He told me it was possible, but then it would be impossible to regulate the temperature of the fireplace. I knew it just had to be hidden away from sight, much like a safe in a mansion. (haha)
I went back to the grocery store where the prints were now $1.99 each. Yup. Two bucks. It was a sign! So I screwed 2 little hinges on the back of the print and then to the wall.
Presto - Hide-o!

It's my party...
We ate delicious Pad Thai, chicken-stuffed chicken and, of course, Pad Poo. No jokes, please~ (we already channeled our inner 13-year-old boys and did!)
The bad photos are by me. Thank you very much. The good ones are by Jack.
After dinner we returned home and played Pictionary. They didn't let me win EVEN THOUGH IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!
We were planning on going to the movies Sunday to see Final Destination 5, but because after Saturday we all look like this today (see wine above):

Gallery Wall
I started by deciding which pictures I wanted to use. The only criteria was that each image had to make me smile or evoke a happy memory. I refused to use anything that I felt "should" be displayed. I am sorry to say that I have done that in the past. I decided to make my home truly "rise up to greet me" (thanks, Oprah and Nate) and that I would start with this wall.
Jack asked that there be no "posed" photos. This was difficult because I really wanted to use my mom's high school graduation photo which was a studio shot. I compromised by using mainly natural-looking pictures, even if the subjects were looking into the lens. I also wanted to do mainly black and white images. I didn't stay exclusively with b & w as my mom's picture was colourized. The pictures that were coloured I scanned, saved on a flashcard and took to my local Walmart store to be printed in black and white. A 4x6 photo is only 30 cents!!! Who knew.
Now it was time to put my plan into action.
Then I moved everything into the dining room. Duh. Why didn't I put everything on the dining room floor???? Because I like doing everything twice? Then I hammered indiscriminately. Don't look behind the pictures - there are lots of holes ;P (ssshh, don't tell anyone), but I like the freeform style.
And I smile every time I walk by the wall.
And that is what it's all about!

Spring Cleaning

I love clearing things out, opening the windows and cleaning off another winter's layer of dust and grunge off the house.
I started yesterday with Jack's closet. This is his pet peeve. He CLAIMS I throw away all his stuff. In his defense I will admit to being the opposite of a hoarder -that is, I tend to get rid of too much. I dislike clutter. It makes me twitchy. Case in point:

As a present for you, here is my (very) green recipe for cleaning solution:
1/4 cup vinegar
1/2 tsp. liquid soap
2 cups water
It works like a dream, is very cheap and is non-toxic for your children and pets.
